Margie Bredenhann: A Journey of Compassion and Commitment

In 2013, Margie Bredenhann left her life in Gauteng and relocated to the tranquil seaside town of Langebaan. Little did she know that this move would mark the beginning of a decade-long journey dedicated to the wellbeing of animals in need. Joining the Langebaan Animal Care (LAC) organization, Margie quickly became an integral part of the community, pouring her heart into her work and leaving a lasting impact on countless furry lives.

A Humble Beginning

Margie’s journey with LAC started in the clinic, where she spent her days dipping dogs, tending to wounds, and caring for puppies. She also assisted in distributing food to those in need. Her hands-on involvement extended to becoming a dog walker at the old shelter, where she found joy in giving the dogs a much-needed taste of freedom and companionship.

It wasn’t long before Margie’s compassion led her to fieldwork, where she partnered with Ella, tirelessly aiding injured animals, educating low-income communities about proper animal care, and advocating for sterilisations to curb overpopulation. “The fieldwork opened my eyes to the realities many animals face,” Margie recalls. “It gave me a deep sense of purpose to help where I could.”

Matching Hearts and Homes

Around five years ago, Margie’s passion for creating lasting connections between animals and families drew her to the adoption team. Recognizing her dedication and skill, she was soon made head of adoptions and fosters, as well as a representative on the LAC committee. For Margie, adoptions aren’t just about finding homes -they’re about finding the right home where animals can thrive and feel loved.

“For many of these dogs love and attention were foreign concepts,” Margie explains. “It became my mission to ensure they went to homes where they could finally experience kindness and care. Watching them transform into their best selves is the most rewarding part of my work.”

A Tale of Triumph: The Collie on a Chain

One of Margie’s most cherished memories is of a beautiful Collie dog she encountered during her fieldwork. Chained to a pole, the dog’s eyes lit up every time he saw the LAC bakkie pull up. His excitement was bittersweet; while he craved attention, his living conditions were far from ideal.

Determined to change his life, Margie spent weeks persuading the owners to let her find him a better home. When they finally agreed, she placed him with a loving foster family. “At first, he refused to sleep indoors,” Margie recalls, laughing. “But soon, he warmed up to the attention, the daily walks, and the comfort of a walled garden.” When the foster family moved, they couldn’t bear to leave him behind and officially adopted him. “Today, he’s living his best life, and the love he gives and receives is truly heartwarming.”

The Heart of LAC

Margie’s role at LAC extends beyond adoptions. As the voice behind the LAC phone, she handles enquiries and complaints with care and dedication. “It’s time-consuming, but my love for animals makes it worthwhile,” she says. Margie’s work is supported by an incredible team of like-minded individuals who share her passion. “We’re like a family. Despite the challenges, we manage to have a lot of fun together.”

Since Margie took on the adoption portfolio over 700 dogs have found their forever homes. Her dream? To reach the 1,000 mark soon. “Finding the right family for the right dog is always a challenge but seeing them thrive makes every effort worthwhile.”

Advocating for Education and Sterilization

Margie believes education is key to improving the lives of animals in the community. “People need to understand their pets’ feelings and needs,” she emphasises. “And sterilisation is crucial. The problem of unwanted dogs is overwhelming and, unless you’re a registered breeder, it’s best to stop bringing more puppies into the world.”

A Bright Future for LAC

Margie is unwavering in her commitment to animal welfare. “Animals have no voice, so I’ll always speak out to protect their rights,” she says firmly. Her passion for fieldwork remains strong, as it addresses the most urgent needs of neglected animals.

For those looking to adopt, Margie describes the process as straightforward: “Choose the dog you fall in love with, fill in an application, undergo a home check, pay the adoption fee, and take your new best friend home. LAC is always here to help with any queries or support.”

Margie Bredenhann’s story is one of unwavering compassion, tireless dedication, and a deep love for animals. Her work with LAC has transformed countless lives, proving that with patience, care, and determination, every animal has the chance to live their best life.
