How It All Started Natalie Pennel has been a devoted volunteer at the shelter for almost four years. Her love for animals has always been a constant in her life, driving her to begin volunteering and devote 15 hours a week to walking and caring for the animals. “I’ve always wanted to work with animals,” she shares, reflecting on the passion that initially brought her to the shelter.
Making a Difference, One Step at a Time One story that remains close to Natalie’s heart is that of JoJo, a small dog who struggled with walking on a leash. “JoJo pulled so much that he would end up walking on his hind legs,” Natalie recalls. Over weeks of patience and care, JoJo transformed, learning to walk calmly on a leash and becoming a well-behaved companion. Natalie smiles, saying, “It was rewarding watching him grow. I often think of him and hope he’s a joy to his new family.”
Lessons in Resilience When asked about favourites at the shelter, Natalie emphasizes that every dog she walks teaches her something unique. Dogs like Shaba and Lucy, who trust despite past hardships, inspire her deeply. “They show resilience and trust despite what humans have done to them. It’s something that leaves a mark on me every time,” she says.
Community Connection and Commitment Natalie highlights that for the animals, time on walks isn’t just about exercise; it’s a chance for genuine human interaction and the belly rubs they adore. She believes community involvement could make a big difference, especially if everyone respected the shelter’s rules and understood the volunteers’ commitment. “It hurts when people complain,” she admits, “We put in so many hours because we care, and we’re trying our best.”
A Word for Change Natalie feels strongly about enforcing the municipal by-law that requires pet sterilization. “If this were enforced, it could greatly improve animal welfare,” she advocates. Her advice to others considering volunteering is simple: “Do it.” For those who can’t volunteer but want to help, she encourages them to keep donating. Every contribution supports the shelter’s ongoing mission to give these animals better lives.
Looking Ahead Natalie’s dedication and the joy of seeing animals thrive and find homes make her volunteer work a truly rewarding journey. “Seeing a dog transform and finally being homed – that’s what makes it all worth it,” she says with a smile.
